Every year during the month of February, millions of people around the world exchange cards,
flower and other romantic items on a celebration called Valentine’s Day. During this celebration, couples
go out on dates, lover’s share an intimate time together; friends and families exchange hugs and spend
quality time.

The greeting card association estimates that approximately one billion valentine cards are sent
each year. The US national census calculates that Americans consume nearly 3.5 million tons of candy
annually and a large portion of this is purchased for Valentine’s Day.
According to the floral index, 110 million roses are sold in the US on Valentine’s Day and
American spends 180 billion on gifts alone. The same thing is practiced in all nations of the world
The celebration of valentine began many centuries ago from the Roman Catholic. Though there
had been different speculations and views about the true history of valentine, what led to the creation and
the true purpose of which it was created? But I am not going into any history. The celebration of
valentine was created by the Roman Catholic for the main celebration of love. But the word love had been
misconnected nowadays and used in another form by engaging in pre-marital sex and which is against the
law of sexual purity made by God. But first let us examine the definition of Love.
WHAT IS LOVE?
As you already know that love is a general factor and a public one, so people get there different
definition. According English oxford dictionary “love is a profound and caring affection
towards someone or a feeling or intense attraction towards someone.” If you
would ask another person about love they might answer that love is having a sexual attraction to someone.
According to a friend of mine he said “love is the higher level of like. It is being
attracted to someone without any reason.” This shows that different people have their
different opinions about what love means and that will determine how they will respond to it.
But according to the word of the Lord of which we are going to use it as our principle to follow
says:
1 John 4;7
“Beloved let us love one another; for love is of God and every one that
loveth is born of God, and knoweth God”.

The season of valentine has opened the eyes of the nowadays youth to romantic feelings and
practices. It has serve as an avenue whereby people can engage in sexual immorality and do all activities
that is against the will of God.
The new testament for all sexual conduct outside of a heterosexual marriage pre-marital sex,
adultery homosexual sex, incest, bestiality etc. is sexual immorality e.g mark 7;20 -23. Let us examine
just one of them, pre-marital sex and what studies have to say about its consequences.
Depression and suicide attempt
A center for disease control and prevention CDC reports revealed that teenagers who remain
abstinence are healthier on many front than their sexually active peers. Another analysis from the heritage
foundation fund that sexually active teenage boys and girls are much lee likely to be happy and more
likely to be depressed and commit suicide compared to teenagers who aren’t sexually active according to
the report the most likely explanation for this is that early sexual activity leads to emotional stress and
reduces happiness.
Sexual regret
Furthermore the CDC report discovered that a majority of sexually active teenagers
experienced regret over their first sexual experience and wished they had avoided it.
This doesn’t just affect teenagers. Similarly results are also seen in young adults. A study by the
society for the scientific study of sexuality revealed that regret over casual sex has been associated with
psychological distress. Like loss of life satisfaction, loss of self-worth, depression and physical health
problems.
Pre-marital sex: poorer quality of marriage
The consequences of pre-marital sex spill over into marriage as well. The US-based national
marriage project found that men and women who had sexual partners other than their spouse, experienced
lower quality in their marriage. Furthermore, the more sexual partners a woman had before marriage, the
less happy she would say her marriage is.
Abstinence: better quality of marriage
The opposite is true: those who reserve sex for marriage are more likely to enjoy marital
relationship. A journal of family psychology study compared couples who had sex in the early stages of
their courtship who waited until marriage to have sex, and it reported that the latter group experienced
higher relationship stability
As a kid in primary school or high school, during the time of this celebration they would be
asked to bring a gift to school on Valentine’s Day and asked to pick an opposite sex as partner and share
the gifts brought. This also happens at church. This has exposed young boys and girls to what is far bigger
than their age and which take them deeper in sin. Being a young person, they have misused the
opportunity and see it as a normal thing to be done. Unmarried couples see this time as a means to engage
in pre-marital sex .it is now an avenue to celebrate their love together.

Dating and pre-marital sex has been the order of the day and the celebration of valentine has
been an instrument in promoting this concept and making it seems as a normal thing to be done, and
through this the law of being sexually pure has been despised and rejected.
Sexually pure is a law from God to all youths who desire a brighter future. It is a necessity for us
to abstain from sexual immorality or any acts that can defile us or make us unholy.
We are therefore commanded to flee from any appearances of evil, so anything that we perceive
to be ungodly should be taken far away from us. To be sexually pure is a honor unto God and respect unto
us.
Sex is strictly permitted only between husband and wife not between boyfriend and girlfriend.
But as a result of the lustful feelings that have dominated the world right now, it has become a normal
thing.
Valentine is a celebration of love not the celebration of sex. Love cannot be found through
ungodly intimacy, it is only through a personal relationship with God. Women should be aware and
sensitive during this period because it was during this period of valentine that some ladies will lose their
pride for the sake of love not knowing that love cannot be found through sexual relationship. Love is God
says the bible love is an action words not just some feelings or emotions.
There has been this mentality among boys and girls to make sure to always look out for girlfriend
and boyfriend on this particular day.
Love is to be shown by our lifestyle towards people around us as Jesus Christ showed us love by
his death for our sins and that is the greatest love ever shown. That love was not characterized by feelings
or emotion but by action.
The celebration of valentine should be done in a moralistic manner that glorifies God. It should
be celebrated with the needy and the poor. We can choose to go out to the less privileged and donate food
items to them and show them love that they have not experience before and give them a hope of a brighter
future and also we can choose to improve our community by doing something beneficial for them, and
then that is the real expression of love not by going to club or engaging in sexual relationship.
There has been a misconception today about the difference between love and lust. There is a clear
difference between this two because God is love and Satan is lust so it depends on what you feeling.
The characteristics of lust is full of things against the will of God such as; pre-marital sex,
kissing. Romance, gay, lesbian and other demonic acts and this are what is mostly practiced nowadays
and they perceive it as the celebration of love
“1cor 13:4-8 says love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love
does not parade itself, is not puffed up love does not behave rudely, does not
seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil does not rejoice in iniquity, but
rejoices in the truth bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never fails, but whether there are prophecies, they

will fail; whether there are tongues they will cease whether there is
knowledge it will vanish away. vs13; and only abide faith, hope, love, these
three but the greatest of these is love.”
This above passage signifies the truth type of love that should be seen and practiced today. This is
the word of the lord that God has given us to follow and The Bible says “Sanctify them by your
truth thy word is truth.” This shows that the word of the lord is truth and well established
because Jesus is the word itself (John1;1-14)
Below are the factors I think if applied well will curb the spread of sexual immorality and bring
about the awareness of the sexual purity.
There should be awareness about the celebration of valentine day. The creation of Valentine day
by the roman catholic is not about engaging in sexual immorality, it was created for the celebration of true
love i.e. love towards one another. There should be this awareness for this present generation. Almost
every church always hold a special service on this valentine day, this is an opportunity for them to teach
those presents about the true celebration of love. But it is a pity that churches now allow those lustful
activities to be practiced and which is against the will of God.
They should use that opportunity to expose those young girls and young boys to the hidden truth
and explain to them the true love which is God. The celebration of love should be according to the creator
of love. God is love and he is the creator of love. The bible says that” for God so loved the world
that he gave his only begotten son for us that whosoever believeth in him
shall not die but have everlasting life” this is the greatest love ever shown to mankind.
There is no love greater than this.
Furthermore the parents should also input into the life of their children the teachings of sexual
purity and its importance. As a parent God had delegated some duties to them to perform over the lives of
our children. They have the duties to inculcate into the lives of their children some norms and morals that
are needed for them to live a fulfilled life.
They should teach them to be sensitive and not be foolish enough to allow them to be defiled by
any man through valentine’s celebration or any other means. The family has a major role to play in the
life of a child in helping him/her make some major decisions that will determine how his future would be.
Lastly the youth also should abstain from any lustful feelings and activities and be filled with the
word of God and be a real follower of Christ. As Paul wrote to timothy in 2 timothy2; 22 that:
“Shun youthful lusts and flee from them, and aim at and pursue righteousness (all that is
virtuous and good, right living, conformity to the will of God in thought, word, and deed) (and aim at
and pursue) faith, love, (and) peace (harmony and concord with others) in fellowship with all
(Christians), who call upon the lord out of a pure heart.”
This a an admonishment from Apostle Paul to his timothy, telling him as a youth to flee from
lustful activities that are characterized with youthful age. Because this things are trap for a brighter future.

It is the intention of the devil to destroy and nullify the plans of God for our life by creating a lustful
atmosphere that will affect us negatively .These should serve as a guiding tools for all aspiring successful
youth.
In conclusion 1Cor 6:15-16, 18-20:
“Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then
take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God
forbid. What? Know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body?
For two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
Vs18: flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body:
but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What?
Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,
which ye have of caused, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a
price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods”.
This season of valentines should be celebrated in a way that please god and glorify him. Visits
the needy or the orphanage home. Show love to everyone. Let the love of Christ abounds and spread
